Teacher Summer Institute has ended
Welcome to Teacher Summer Institute 2017!  For the first time ever, Boston Public Schools and the Boston Teachers Union are co-hosting an academic conference for teachers.  TSI will focus on highlighting the best practices of some of our most passionate urban educators across BPS.  Teachers, central office staff, and valued members of our community will join together to help bring a shared vision for instruction to life across the district. Please note, this is open to all educators, and is not exclusively for new teachers. We hope to see you there!

ESL Teacher
With fifteen years’ experience teaching students from many culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, I am a passionate educator who strives to provide quality instruction to all learners. Currently, I am a middle school ESL teacher at Umana Academy and have taught in BPS for the past eight years. I earned a Master’s in Education from UMass Boston and the Teacher Education Program Award for Excellence from the Curriculum and Instruction Department in 2009. After that, I attended NYU’s Multicultural Multilingual Studies program, where I earned a Post-MA in TESOL. In 2016, I earned a doctorate in education from UMass Boston’s Urban Education, Leadership, and Policy Studies’ program. My dissertation, Transmigration Experiences of Newcomers in the Context of an English-only Education: Sense-making by Former Newcomer ELLs, won the Alumni Award for Dissertation Research from the Department of Leadership in Education in 2015. I have presented my work at the II International Colloquium on Languages, Cultures, and Identity in School and Society in Soria, Spain, and at the annual MATSOL Conference in Framingham, MA.
