Welcome to Teacher Summer Institute 2017! For the first time ever, Boston Public Schools and the Boston Teachers Union are co-hosting an academic conference for teachers. TSI will focus on highlighting the best practices of some of our most passionate urban educators across BPS. Teachers, central office staff, and valued members of our community will join together to help bring a shared vision for instruction to life across the district. Please note, this is open to all educators, and is not exclusively for new teachers. We hope to see you there!
Participants will understand three essential components of creating a safe, healthy and sustaining learning environment. The first component, Understanding Self, will help participants understand their own cultural background and how it impacts their actions and beliefs in the classroom. The second component, Community: School and Home, will help participants to understand how to educate the whole child by identifying student assets and needs as well as recognizing the cultural and linguistic identities of the students, families and communities. The third component, Facilitating Engaging Learning, will help participants learn to develop an active, student-centered learning experience that establishes classroom routines and rituals that affirms student identities and agency, promotes healthy choices, and develops a safe climate and environment.
What unique experiences, thoughts and behaviors do white female educators bring to the urban classroom? What strengths do these educators bring and what are areas of growth? Learn what the research says and engage in self-reflection and discussion.

For the last three years, the BTU has collaborated with UMASS Boston and the Boston Writing Project to create this deeply personalized action research graduate course.
